A die spring is a compression spring made from rectangular wire. The advantage of rectangular wire is that it contains more material within the same volume (see image); therefore, the die spring has a longer deflection for the same dimensions and spring constant.
A die spring is specifically designed as a standardized compression spring to handle high loads. Each manufacturer has developed its own color for these springs.
